My uncle is a Washington Stater, and he and I have had some interesting discussions about this. He has a wife and young kid, and I know for a fact there is no way he would second guess his decision to pull the trigger if he felt a threat. Heck, he was absolutely freaking out (extremely rare for him. He is always calm and composed) when those officers were shot in Lakewood - to the point that he was filling out reports one night when a man approached his car to ask for directions, and instead ended up staring down the business end of his duty pistol.

These officers put THEIR lives on the line for us, why should we make their job harder and more stressful than it already is. Cut them a break - DON'T DO STUPID STUFF.

It should be obvious, however, that my arrival at these conclusions came from my understanding of airsoft replicas along with assumptions based on what I know about you -- and not the understanding of real steel firearms which a police officer would draw from.

Let's not ignore the further obvious argument that I got to study a photograph -- along with the 9 people who got it wrong, regardless.

Don't make the assumption that all LEO's are "gun people". A great percentage of the people that I worked with (over 50%) were clueless.....some to the point of incompetence. Many/ most are not going to take the time to look at the gloss of the grip or how far back the trigger is. A great " wheres Waldo" exercise and thanks for it whomever posted the picture. A diversion however. A friend of mine, Sgt, SWAT member and so on, has told me that it does not matter if a gun has an orange tip or not....the person wielding the weapon is going to be disarmed first and then it will be sorted out. That is what you can expect from most LEA if you display in public.

Can't say as I blame them. My belief has always been that it is MY responsibility to behave like an adult with airsoft replicas, not the responsibility of the police officer to distinguish between the replica versus a real gun.

I mean, I expect that the offcer, even under stress, could determine the difference between, say, a hair dryer and an MP-5. I still wouldn't go around pointing a Conair at cops and cackling maniacally.

My point is, if it looks like a weapon, treat it like a weapon. Assume that an uninformed outsider is an idiot, and act accordingly. What we in the community see regularly is something that may be unusual and scary to someone without our experience. And when you factor in adrenaline and fear on the part of the perciever, small details tend to be overlooked.

In my book, it is a 'win' when everyone goes home that night to their loved ones. My second-best option is that I go home and the other guy ends up in a box. I asssume that police officers share this view, and base my decisions and actions when around them accordingly.

Don't be an idiot.
Follow all verbal orders slowly and methodically.
Don't make sudden moves or verbally hostile or ambiguous statements.

Once the officer has enough control over his surroudings to feel safe, then you can discuss the situation with them calmlyand rationally. You may be in cuffs at the time, and you will probably be physically seperated from your gear and replicas. Chances are good that they will have run your id to make sure you don't have any wants / warrants. But once they have established enough situational control, chances are that you can then open a rational dialogue with them to resolve any misunderstandings.

Yeah, the fluted barrel was a dead ringer. The second one was close, I wouldn't put it past someone to have a crane stock because they are comfy.
