gas block for free float rail

Postby CCCman » Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:01 pm

Hi, i have a standard g&p m4a1, with no modifications.
I would like to swap the handguards out for some Daniel defense lite 9" rails. I plan to make it a free float rail so i will remove the front sight. Do i need a gas block for the rail to be able to "free float"? If so, i have already picked out my gas block and i am wondering if it will fit in the rail. I will replace the stock outer barrel with a madbull 10" outer barrel.

P.S. Are the threads on the madbull barrel 14mm pos or 14mm neg?

Since it says the RIS has no hole for the gas tube, I'm guessing that the gas block will be uneccessary. The gas block isn't needed for support since that would mean its not really free float right? ;)

Madbull barrels are 14mm neg. G&P is the only company that uses 14mm pos IIRC.

The gas block doesn't really have anything to do with the rail. It just sits in front and looks like a gas block, helps block off the front of your rail system. But otherwise it's just for looks.

thanks guys, i think i will still buy it for the realism, but it will fit inside the rail right? As in, it is hidden unless you look at it from the barrel.

If you go here...

...it sure looks like you won't have any problem with a fake gas tube.

I've actually got one of those 9" lite rails. You can put a tube, but it does not go all the way to the receiver like some. There is a piece of metal blocking the top of the rail where the tube would be just before the mounting bracket at the receiver end. The tube will sit there, but it doesn't actually have anything to hold it. I am thinking about drilling a small indent in mine for the tube to be secure.

I drilled all the way through and put the gas tube all the way into the receiver on two airsoft guns. It takes a minute but it's doable.

Thank you!, but i just realized, will the barrel be long enough to be "in sync" with the rail? i don't want my barrel to be shorter than the rail because that would just look stupid.

Unless you use a CQBR barrel, you'll be fine. I run a 13.2" Larue free float handguard on a standard M4 outer barrel, and the threads and .5" of outer barrel extend past it.

You may need an extended flash hider. Or a longer barrel.

Generally, at least in the real steel world, the barrel measurement starts from the back face of the chamber. The rail starts at the front face of the delta ring. So, if your barrel is 10", you probably only have about 9 or so inches that project past the delta ring.

Either go with a longer outer barrel, shorter rail, or just mount a can on the end of it to make up the difference.
