Foam Density

Postby Blizzard » Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:20 pm

I'm going to be filling a mock silencer with foam, and I have a simple question: Do you want the foam to be more or less dense, and why? I.e., is spray foam good or is it too dense?

This will be used on a NBB Mk23

I believe the function of foam in a supressor is to absorb gas. It would follow that a more porous foam would function better I think.

Spray foam is made up of some sort of glue/expanded gas.

What you want is open cell foam, like the 'egg crate' foam.

Bingo. Go get an old mattress pad. That will be perfect for what you are looking for. Also, be aware that this is a very controversial topic. Some consider airsoft guns firearms, and suppressors that work muffle the report of said firearm, you run into the legality of not registering them.

Okay, since my question has already been answered, let's get into a legality discussion: What exactly does the law say about silencing a gun that fires a projectile using compressed air? If it is illegal as some say, how does Gamo get away with selling to the public a silenced pellet rifle called the "Whisper"?

I believe the Pellet rifle is not considered a "Firearm," and as it would render the suppressive capabilities useless if you attempted to modify it to fire bullets, it doesn't require a license. Just my guess...

Also it's probably because it's integrated, so it's not technically being suppressed. That's just the way it is.

This is what I found on sound suppressor laws in Washington.

Don't know if this helps at all, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
