a SSD would increase battery life, also, for the purposes its being used, you need very little hard drive space. just the OS and a single program.

I'd imagine you can probably rig the thing up using a netbook

and if you are running a powerful enough wireless signal you could have more than enough range for the commander back at HQ to have real time tracking on where his units are.

and give commands via radio that could also be displayed on the map.

The squad leaders would be able to see where they need to go in relation to their position and scale the map as needed, instead of having to use a paper map.

So about the only things this needs to be a fully integrated combat system is a smaller screen, a longer battery life, and longer range wireless connection.

A long range wireless could allow people like me who don't have fancy schmansy iphones to use their ipod touches to tap into the network. Figure, wear it on the sleeve like the wrist mounted GPS units. And with their touch screen keybords, you have a squad mobile version of this....

question... is the keyboard disabled? because it looks like you don't have a monitor attached to the laptop, so there must be a lot of unwanted keyboard input, especially return and function key inputs to be exact.

This is something I would probably break very quickly. But it could work quite well for commanders and such. Perhaps linked with a smaller, more durable and mobile unit, something similar to an iPhone, it could provide a quicker interface for relaying objectives between command and units in the field.

This is probably similar to where the developers for the military started. But there is a big difference in requirements for the military. 99.999% reliability for broadband access as well as major heavy duty encryption, 48 hour minimum battery life, integrate into a 30 or 40lb loadout without increasing the weight dramatically... but the proof on concept is there.

Can you foresee any problems with the processor overheating since there isn't a lot of breathable space?

The Core Solo chip is a very energy-efficient processor. For the applications I'm running there is very little taxation on the CPU, and it is throttled down to a very low speed. If it were to overheat the unit would simply shut down because of its thermal protection, but I see that as unlikely. I used it for almost an hour last night without issue.

The keyboard on the laptop is indeed disabled. I took the LCD off the laptop to shave off two pounds as it was unnecessary to the application. Pinned to the Win 7 taskbar is the onscreen keyboard, if input is necessary.

Ideally, the entire system could be powered by the guts of a netbook with an SSD. The runtime would improve and the total weight and space requirements would drop drastically. As I said, I built this for free out of junk, so given time and money I'd like to improve the concept.

EDIT: I'll be performing some upgrades and tests today to see if runtime can be improved.

you stole my idea you bastard!
:D kudos on the front mounted touch screen though, i always imagined the screen on the back, with a flip down keyboard, so someone would use your back as a mobile workstation.

I will do that, Nasty.

Update to follow regarding battery capacity and runtime improvements.

The military should buy thousands of those $99 netbooks, tape it to the interceptor, and let the tropps have at it. :D

To quote band of brothers: "Pack yer bags fellas, war's over."
"Why do you need a GUN?!"
"To poke holes in things too far away to get with the stick."

Maybe attaching a camera to the gun would be a good idea. You could put the gun around the corner and shoot without risking to get hit.

Blind firing is incredibly lame, unsafe, and dishonorable.
