Advanced Integrated Combat Computing System (AICCS)

UPDATED PICTURES ON PAGE 3

Bad Karma here with a new piece of Tactical and Impractical kit.

The Advanced Integrated Combat Computing System is a full Windows 7 touchscreen computer built into an Operator Plate Carrier, covered in molle and multicam, and designed specifically to piss off the having-more-than-a-hicap-and-a-JG-while-wearing-woodland-makes-you-an-elitist-fuck crowd. ;)

Image

Truthfully, I designed it for both CQC and outdoor use, and both may see some benefit from it.

First things first: This is a prototype, designed STRICTLY as a proof-of-concept. That means that yeah, it's janky as all shazaam. However, it is 100% operational and fieldable, and built on a budget of exactly $0.00 out of shit I had around my apartment/office. With money and time this could be refined for much greater efficiency and I plan to do just that.

Hardware Specs:
Core Solo 2.0 GHz Processor
2GB DDR2
80GB HDD
Windows 7 Professional
7" Active Touch Panel TFT Display
NTSC camera with 90 degree bend for corner-viewing
~4hr run-time
GPS and 3G Broadband Access for real-time satellite mapping
Total weight is around 7lbs.

Image

The PC itself is integrated into the back of a multicam OPC, fitting snuggly where the rear plate would normally go.

Image

The VGA and USB connections are run through the vest, excess cables stored in one of the interal pouches on the cumberbund.

Image

The LCD, outside of its multicam cozy. The cozy was built out of an OD water bladder, down to size, and wrapped in multicam fabric from an old BDU.

Image

The camera system is a 90 degree bent piece of conduit with a webam optic on the front. In the future, this will be rebuilt to be more tacticool and will include infrared LEDs for night vision.

Image

The whole apparatus is designed to stay in place at the proper viewing angle with no additional support, that way the camera system can be used with the off hand while the user has their sidearm at the ready, keeping more guns downrange.

Image

The package is slim and doesn't add much thickness to the vest, helping maintain high speed and low drag. ;)

Also, I should mention that this was constructed, in its entirety, tonight (from concept to completion) because I'm bored and have a toothache.

In other news: I have entirely too much time on my hands.

There is no word that can describe how amazingly tingly I feel at the sight of that.

I'm admittedly pretty impressed with myself at the moment.

Also, I just discovered a bonus feature for it's Conflict Europe 4 debut:

The laptop gets toasty as shazaam in the back pouch, its like an instant chest-cavity hot patch. Sweet for 20 degree weather.

This is one of the best things I've seen in a while.
You could hook a snake cam up to it to feed under doors or around corners.

Also, on a noob-ish note, does anyone else think that if Karma had an OD cap and was in DPM, he'd look kind of like Gaz? (people who understand this question will know why it's a noob-ish one).

Well I can pull realtime map data down from my Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS antenna and overlay it onto a topographical map. Alternately, I'm trying to figure out how to feed my iphone's GPS coordinates over USB to the unit. I'm running a jailbroken iPhone with PDANET to handle the 3G broadband tethering, so I could use that data as well.

If any of my friends are using Android based phones, I can get them to appear as dots with "friends near me" from google. Might be cool to work that out for tracking movement of squads outdoors.

So if any other people had this with them, could you, let say, have a picture of battleground, then draw movement directions, then send it to the other user? This makes me think of the tech that we run in our tanks.

If you both had web access then yes. However, the practicality of this thing is already pretty low and co-ordinating syncing drawings via plate-carrier-mounted PCs is pretty logistically retarded. That's what commanders and radios are for:

"Squad 1 move to grid 24, Squad 2 check Squad 1 and move to grid 22" or whatever.

So in just one day with crap laying around the house, you pretty much built what the army was spending millions on to create?

Pretty neato stuff. Isn't the bouncing around going to be bad for the HD, though?

Essentially, yes. Then again, this piece of shit will be lucky to survive CE4 in one piece, let alone months or years of active service in the middle of the bleeding desert. Still, though, as a proof-of-concept it was pretty simple and affordable to make. Had I bought everything new, I imagine the total cost would be near $800 or so. If you wanted it done right, assuming wireless cameras, solid state drives, properly built mounting/load bearing gear it would probably be double that.

Insofar as the hard drive is concerned, it will probably be fine. Laptop drives are pretty resilient. I wouldn't recommend storing irreplacable family photos on the thing, but it should hold up for a while. I need to buy an SSD in the future for sure, though.

As I suggested, perhaps a transparent OLED would be a nice upgrade, although you lose the touchscreen capabilities. As for the bouncing, you might look into the new OCZ SSDs when they come out. I don't think they have any laptop specific models, but I'll go looking.

Ah, here we are. Seems Newegg has a whole section on drives, although its the cost of a new computer to get one with decent capacity.

That being said, seriously? You have all this shit just lying around to be cannibalized?

The King Of al-Talk. Hey, at least I'm not a troll.

Well maybe not running around doing it, maybe just sending its a s commander while squad leaders look at it. Also it limits the range, does it have to be internet access or can it be a be in range(like a DS) type of thing?

Yeah a SSD would be dreamy. Cost is a factor, though. I could always go the compact flash route to save some dough.

And yeah, the amount of computer shit I have laying around is pretty retarded.

EDIT: @Deathlycobra: You could establish an ad-hoc wireless network that would be good for 100 feet or so. Or you could use bluetooth for 30 feet or so.

Shit man, your an inspiration to us all. Think there is any good way to increase the battery life from 4 hours? I know its awesome and a feat in itself you got that, but 4 hours wont cut it in an op methinks...
