Gear necessities?

Postby Devin » Wed Feb 23, 2011 7:26 pm

Hey guys, I am new to this and would love a list of all of the gear (other than a replica) that I will need. My budget is about $800-$1200 at most for all the stuff including a replica. Any advice would be greatly apreciated! Thanks!

Most important is GOOD BOOTS. If you plan on playing in Oregon during the winter months you will for sure need quality boots-don't be cheap here. Also, I think it is kind of a no-brainer, but make sure they are waterproof. I have a pair of Danner's which I personally love.

Something you don't want to spend money on is a side arm. In out door use, they are next to useless, and only add weight in my experience.

If you've got that kind of budget, don't buy china clone gear. Invest in a quality base, maybe some Flyye or Pantac or maybe a nice Tactical Tailor Mav (shameless plug).

How you build on that base depends on your style of play. Take a look through the myraid of picture threads on this forum that the members here have been kind enough to compile and see what you like. There are many options.

Also think about where you will be playing, field or CQB, will your engagements be long range or short, etc.

^^ And a side arm isn't useless, however it should always be treated as a backup. You want something that works when you need it, every time, but isn't going to break the bank. If you're in open field and you need to draw your sidearm, you're most likely already in trouble (primary weapon down, etc.) CQB sidearms are a totally different story as you're required by the event sponsors to have them 99% of the time to clear rooms.

All right, here we go!

Airsoft Gun (3 choices) $235-$280
Echo 1 AK http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=408_415&products_id=5331
G&P M4 http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_24_375&products_id=6985
VFC M4 http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_24_142&products_id=5730

Mid Capacity Magazines (depends on gun type) ~$80
AK Mags http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_112_276&products_id=2530
M4 Mags http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_56_420&products_id=29302

Vest/Plate Carrier (Don't get Condor/OE Tech, they won't last) ~$70
Pantac MBSS http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_171&products_id=6919
Pantac AK Rig http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_172&products_id=6917

Pouches (depends on gun type) ~$80
AK Mag Pouch http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_101_296&products_id=7585
M4 Mag Pouch http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_101_296&products_id=7588

Uniform
Multicam http://www.airsoftoutletnw.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=156&Itemid=28
UCP http://www.airsoftoutletnw.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=152&Itemid=28

All of this is what I would have bought if I was ever in your position. The sites that you can get these products varies (I personally shop at AONW) as do the products themselves. This is meant as a general overview, obviously there are more than AK's and M4's, but they are the most economical guns. Do research on all the products listed above, although you will need some that I didn't mention, like batteries, BB's, and boots. Have fun and come prepared!

Honestly I would almost say its ok to grab chinese clone pouches, because they don't go through nearly as much as your rig does. 30 bucks before shipping is hefty for one pouch.

This is just my opinion though!

Don't buy condor with that budget. Pantac for gear, G&P for guns. You can get any camo you want as long as it's green or tans like MC or MARPAT. The already listed Pantac rigs were good but so are all pantac rigs. You've got so much freedom with that budget.

edit: or jeans and hoodie with this: http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=154_157&products_id=7576

Get the basics first. Then see what you need / like based on your style of game play. Most people I see, are loaded up with so much stuff that it limits their mobility. They get hung up on brush, mag pouches are all around their bods, the first time down in the mud they gain 10 lbs from the debris / mud their gear picks up. Get a good gun , a few mags ( mids) and something basic to hold the mags till you figure out what you need. Oh and welcome to AP!!

Yeah, I agree.

Also, start by going to small, free events instead of big ones to learn the community and tactics. And lingo.

Does AP post all of their events up here (as far as cheap/free ones) or do I have to look elsewhere for those? also, I currently have a set of woodland BDUs those would be fine right?

Yes to both. Woodland is the most common camo pattern used, and all AP events are posted. Usually at least one game every weekend.

If you want to save money, buy military surplus stuff like ALICE belt rigs and LBV-88s. They are far cheaper than any MOLLE vest and are just as useful. Body armor is completely useless in outdoor games except for looking tacticool, so I suggest light rigs. For example, if you buy an ALICE belt, two canteens with pouches, two M16 magazine pouches, buttpack and H- or Y-harness altogether you could keep the price easily below 50 dollars if you search around. At that point, you're wearing two liters of water, enough space in your buttpack for extra ammo, batteries what have you and seven magazines. Oh, and it's going to last because it's designed to. If you wanted to go even cheaper, you could get a Chicom AK chest rig, which is well known for its durability.

MOLLE plate carriers are bulky and annoying IMO. They are also quite a lot hotter. In real life, I'd wear one because that plate could keep me alive, but in airsoft it's just extra bulk - and expensive bulk at that.

Sure, you can spend that much money, but really, why? You don't turn any heads wearing a full plate carrier, you just look like the crowd.

I dont mean to come across as a rich kid who wants the best most expensive stuff, I only put the high budget up so you guys wouldnt be shy about what you suggest. Yes, I am willing to spend that much, but saving is always better, so thanks for the input vorgon.

And, with that money you save, you can buy a Real Sword AK!

Which are absolutely beautiful and fantastic. Fragistan has three and they rock. Their build quality is to real gun standard rather than toy standard.
