Best way to RAID modify a T-Shirt?

Discussion of load-bearing equipment, tactical gear, holsters, BDUs, and other gear related to Airsoft.

It looks a lot like the US Army's issued T-shirt that is made to go with the ACUs, though it might not be.

There are T-Shirts like this for sale, so he probably bought one of those. It's a lot harder to sew T-Shirts, because they aren't as durable, and there is no extra fabric to make the pockets from the original shirt.

Beyond that, he just put a pocket on the shirt with the same material as the shirt, then put velcro on top of that.

BTW, I have no idea how to sew, so this is just my way of giving advice when I have no idea what's being discussed.

The pocket would be more rigid if you used a pocket from a 3 color DCU top. Hard part would be keeping the t-shirt from binding and bunching up as you sew on the pocket.

Also I'm not sure how good a ripstop pocket would stay on a T-Shirt.

If you put a more solid fabric on the inside of the shirt and teh pocket on the out and sew all three together that will make it more durable. Basically make a sandwich outta your sleeve.

I have personally sewn a shirt before. I was bored one summer and my mom signed me up for a sewing class :) haha

Anyways, make sure you don't use a sharp needle to sew shirts. If you do, it will tear through the shirt and you will have a bunch of holes where the stitches should be. Instead, use a needle that has a ball point.

You can sew on pockets using shirt material, it just won't be as rigid and abrasion resistant as, lets say, what the Crye Combat Shirt is made out of. You could put a lot of starch on it though, which would make it more rigid if necessary.

You would sew on the pocket before you sew on the sleeve. Make sure to sew on the velcro, then the pocket, and then the flap, which I assume will also have velcro first sewn on it.

I think you could pull off sewing the pocket on a white t shirt as white t shirt material is easy to match, and then dying that t shirt into a color of your choice, but buying a t shirt and finding matching material would be a pain, and sewing an entire t shirt would be a pain also. It was hard enough for myself to sew one, even with an instructor who had been sewing for over 40+ years by my side.

Hope this answers some questions.

It is a matter of if the ballpoint needle would be successful at puncturing through the ripstop. If the ball point needle could penetrate the ripstop, then why not?? Ball point needles are really only designed to puncture through cotton t-shirt material, so I don't know how well it would puncture through ripstop. I'm assuming ripstop would use a normal sharp point needle that would probably need to be thicker (I don't know by heart what size of needles that should be used for various types of materials, but the thicker the material, the thicker the needle. I'm sure you can look it up online) than the needle used for the t-shirt, so it'd have to be an experiment as I don't know for sure, but T-shirt material HAS to have a ball point needle otherwise it will be torn apart.

One of the problems with T-shirt material is that it's stretchy, so try to avoid over or under stretching the material while sewing. If you do decide to make the pocket out of T-Shirt material, then try to not stretch the pocket at all otherwise your sleeve will be all bunched up, and leave some slack in the pocket material, obviously, so that you have room to put stuff in it.

It would be like sewing nametapes; make sure to pre-shrink the pocket fabric first to avoid the "fatal crinkle".

Do you think I could make the pockets out a khaki ripstop material and sew them on to a t shirt?

Yes... What you will need to do is make the pocket out of ripstop material, seeing as how if you make it out of t-shirt material it will just stretch out of shape... my suggestion would be take the WHOLE pocket front and back and then take another piece of ripstop fabric for the inside... Stitch the all the way around the pocket encasing the t-shirt material inside a layer of ripstop. This way the pocket will not be relying on the t-shirt material to hold the stitches.
you will find that the pocket will not be able to hold anything of real weight without stretching the sleeve of the t shirt, but it could hold maps or a candy bar...
