Cheaper Throat Mic

Postby mollypoon » Sat Aug 21, 2010 11:52 pm

I came across this: http://www.kawamall.com/pd_1x_midlndmltr.cfm

$36 seems a little cheap for a throat mic. Does anyone here know anything about or have experience with this particular throat mic? If you do, does it work well or even work? Do you think a $36 throat mic could work reasonably well? It looks like a replica of the Stryker Lite to me: http://www.clearercom.com/stryker_lite.htm
I've had one similar - the dual pickup coils is definitely something you want, but the PTT button is weak, and they have a tendency to come apart in rough play.

Try one of these:

Look in that list for one that matches your radio - they're a little more expensive but they have a heavier duty PTT button, along with the dual pickups you'll want (for better clarity and louder input).
ALSO - if the earpiece isnt to your liking, or dies on you - it has a 3.5 mm jack in the back of the neck in case you want to add your own earpiece, or have a buddy piggyback your comms.

Just my suggestion

Thank you, I couldn't find any midland ones on there. I heard that Icom plugs have to be soldered in order to work in midland radios correctly; I would rather not deal with that.

I found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Throat-Mic-Midland-Extra-Talk-G-GXT-LXT-GMRS-Radios-/140355776763?pt=2_Way_Radios_FRS It has a heavy duty PTT and has a midland plug. I do not see a 3.5mm jack, though. Is there an advantage to the velcro throat mics over the all plastic ones?

Yeah, most definitely. Picked up one of the ones you just looked at myself.

Your voice won't come across very clear or loud unless it fits your neck PERFECTLY... and that style was rather small, it barely fit on my 16 year old sisters neck...

You can hear everyone else just perfectly though.

I would avoid throat mics like the plague.

I have some of the professionally made ones used by the US Mil and even those are way too much of a hassle.

Thank you, I will take your advice and look into some bowman style replicas instead.
