Gas gun/Spring compatability

Im just getting into airsoft, not very educated so i apologize if this is a stupid question.
I have a M4 GBB, can i put another spring into it to increase the FPS? is it that simple? or does it have to be a special spring or can i even do it at all?

Gas blow backs are powered by gas, the spring is just for functionality, not power. And electric blow back would be a different story.

Different gases (gas pressures at least) and valves allow changing in FPS.
