Alright, so what stupid thing am I doing wrong?

Postby Grease » Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:46 pm

Just recieved a brand new KWA M9 PTP from AONW.

I opened it up, loaded and gassed up the mag, went to test it, and... The mag only fires 3 times before running out of gas.

What obvious mistake am I not realizing that I'm doing?

Edit: I'm using Propane, if that matters.

Does the mag leak?
Does the propane tank still have gas inside it?
Does the gas spew out from the gun like crazy when you shoot it?

No, Yes, No.

To all outward appearances, it looks like it works just fine. The first couple of shots look just like any other gas gun I've seen in action. It's a brand new gun, mag and propane tank, so I'm really confused as to why it won't work.

Could the little Coleman propane tanks just not be filled full enough to give a mag a proper gas pressure?

Make sure you are using a full tank of propane.

Well, that time it fired 8 rounds before running out.

Yay! Improvement!

Well, it seems to be working now. Apparently it was just experiencing stage fright, or something.

Probably just needed to be used a bit to get used to being used (try saying that 10 times fast)

And uh... initially I was holding the mag upside down (which would be right side up) when gassing it. Still not sure why it only fired 8 before dying the first time I held it correctly...

Another thing - you can still fill the mag up after you stop hearing the filling sound, just don't hold it in for too long. I had a KJW P229 for a while, and when I filled up the magazine until the sound stopped, it only got about 15 shots, but if you keep filling for maybe 3 seconds after the sound stops, it should be full. After that I was getting about 30 rounds.

Still sucky though compared to my KSC USP compact which gets about 70 rounds to a fill haha.

But the KWA should be getting quite a few shots off on a charge as well.
This is my signature. Hear it roar.

Have two PTPs, mags work great, even one thats falling apart still unloads.
Propane expands in heat and compresses in cold. If both your mag and propane tank are cold, charge the mag and then hold the mag in your hand or put it under your belt. After you can stand the cold metal pop it in and see how it does. Also the faster you fire the quicker your mag will get cold from the firing so your mag will cool and lose pressure limiting the shots if you just empty the mag in one go.
This doesn't have to be done every time, if you gas up a mag in your cool house and go to a game on a hot day the temperature of the mag should be great.
You should easily get ~30 cycles out of the mag it comes with.

Addition: New propane bottle works wonders as well.
Kick me. I go "Moooooooo!!!!!"

A good way to get them cold is to fill it for ~2 seconds, then let out the gas. Then, fill it up "all the way" and stick it in your pocket. I can get ~3 magazines with slide lockback out of my WE (yes WE) 1911 (single stack).

This is how you get thin walled magazines to explode... FYI...

The amount of shots you can fire is directly proportional to the pressure inside the magazine. So the best thing to do is fill a magazine completely, then put it on your dashboard for a few hours before using it. The heat makes the gas expand even more.

While I thought Switchback's idea was good (it's something I've found works well), I think Ivan's idea is going a little too far.

Also, I've never had any issues filling KWA mags the way Switchback mentioned.
