Air travel and magazines.

Postby Orwell » Wed Dec 19, 2012 2:12 pm

Hi all!

I'm flying out in six days, and I'd like to check my pistol in my bag. I already called ahead to TSA and verified that checking airsoft weapons in normal baggage is acceptable. My question is this: What would be the best way to preserve the magazines for my 1911? I figure I shouldn't fill them, but would a partial fill be wise? Or should I leave them empty?

Did you talk to the TSA at each airport your heading to? I've heard that people have checked at one got an okay, but the other on the return or arrival had an issue.

i would take the safe approach and use a lockable container and lock it & check it. there are some TSA approved containers or they list what types and sizes you are allowed up to - last time I checked.

that is the basis of airport security for firearms that I have read.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Payback, I hadn't asked the return airport. I'll do that. Worst case, I ship them back. I've got almost a year to plan.

I would treat them the same as firearms and check them in a TSA approved container with a personal lock attached. You also have to consider that firearms get stolen from unlocked or the TSA-openable locked luggage sometimes, and if it looks close enough, it's probably enough to get stolen, or at least your locks broken.
