Field chrono practice and hopup settings

Postby Nox » Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:57 pm

I was wondering how guns are "officially" chrono'd before stepping on the field at Mollala and other fields if folks have input.
Is it done:
A) With the gun's hopup tuned for level bb flight and optimal firing, the chrono reading is taken and that is your velocity,
or
B) With the hopup turned all the way off the gun is fired and the reading taken is your velocity, then the gun is tuned for optimal flight.

I'm trying to figure out the baseline for readings so we can be the same down here as the fields up north and surrounding areas. Plus, we are trying to make sure that hopup "fudging" is avoided so people don't slip past the chrono by goosing the hop with silicone, etc.

Thanks for any info.

as a participant, I've never had my hopup adjusted by the chronoer (is that even a word?) ie: its chrono'd at my setting for best accuracy

and when I'm standing in line, if I hear someone talking about how they're afraid thier gun shoots too hot and they tried this cool new thing to trick the chrono, I point them out to an event coordinator

from a technical stand point all guns should be chronoed with hop-up TURNED OFF.

Applying hop up actually reduces fps so you never will have a real accurate reading.

At infidel bash we will chrono will hopup turned off..

Ok, I was wondering about the hop off or on debate - some of the guns down here have chrono'd hotter with them on, rather than off - My MP5 chrono'd 15 fps faster with the hop turned on than without.
To broaden the question - would this be true for the gun, or just for the particular chrono being used?

in theory it would be the gun,

because unless I'm mistaken, whether or not the bb is spinning doesn't effect the way the chrono reads it

Well . . . . . . if i turn the hop-up all the way "ON", it takes more energy for the bb to push past, than if i have the hop-up turned all the way "OFF"

;) chrono with the hop-up off.

Ok, thanks for the replies folks - when things get to the chrono point here at the field, I'll suggest we do it that way.

thats one of my biggest pet pevs!

along with:
"ya. my gun is shooting 400 FPS..."
[chronos the gun, it shoots 340]
"WTF! On box It said it shoots 400!"

I lmao. I can picture that perfectly. Had a friend bragging about his aftermath MP5 shooting at "450" fps. We wouldn't let him play (to which he called us pussies) till we read it was 450 with .12s.

If my gun shoots 380 with the hopup dialed, why would I turn my hopup off and hose people at 403 at any point during the game?

It is a serious pain in my a$$ to re-dial in a hopup, which is why I tend not to mess with it. I would not sacrifice 50+ feet of accuracy for a measly 20fps, which isn't even going to help me cut brush.

Exactly. If you're not going to be shooting your gun at people with the hopup off... why turn it off to chrono?

Because some players will turn their hop-up way way up just to put some extra resistance on the BB to bring the FPS down, and then re-adjust it to where they want it after chrono. This allows a player who's gun shoots 420 with the hop-up dialed to get in by cranking it down so it's right at 399.
