How do you chrono?

Postby Nox » Sun Aug 22, 2010 9:52 pm

We're having a bit of a safety debate down here and we were wondering what the final tell-all, be-all decision for hopup chronoing should be -
Hopup on, or off?

We've noticed that there are jumps in FPS after testing some guns. When the hopups are off we've chrono'd guns and taken a baseline speed, then turned the hopup to field play accuracy and had them shoot as high as 30fps than when tested off..but in the same respect, I've seen somewhere that the 'true speed' of the bb is with the hopup completely off.
How can it be the true speed when it increases with it at field play setting? [rhetorical question there]

So what's the one final decision on this? On and set to field play, or off?
Thanks!

I have only once been asked to turn off my hop-up at chrono, and that was Gallant Sabre III.

I'd say hopup on. Test the gun as it'll be used on the field. Maybe a quick test shot beforehand downrange to ensure they aren't intentionally setting the hopup low to lower their FPS reading.

Set the hopup as it would be in the field. It gets the gun shootin straight, and gives you an accurate reading. I've seen a gun shoot 50fps lower with the hop all the way on vs where it would be normally. That was the difference between play and no play.

Ok, thanks!
Guess we'll be chronoing with hopups set and on from now on. ;)

Hop-up dialed to how the user will be shooting all day. It'd be counter-intuitive to drop the hop-up and increase FPS if your gun is already shooting level. Of course, this means chrono attendants would have to watch the BBs. If they curved too high they'd have to ask the shooter to step aside and dial their gun down.

Who would ever play with their hop up off, anyway?
